The D20 lamp is a lampshade with almost 40cm in diameter, built in a style fitting a gaming room, representing a large 20-sided die (an icosahedron) commonly used in pen & paper role playing games.
It is assembled from several components:
- An acrylic frame gives it its shape,
- a thin cloth cover diffuses the light, along with felt numbers that give it the characteristic D20 look, and
- an off-the-shelf E27 socket attaches it to the ceiling.
The Frame
The assembled frame construction
The frame consists of 30 edge bars meeting at 12 circular vertex joints. It is cut from 3mm transparent acrylic sheets, with slots on both sides for a stable connection, and relief notches to prevent fracturing. It holds its form when stuck together, albeit just losely so – good enough to stand on its own, and when assembled it is held by the cloth cover.
The three bars at the top contain additional notches which the whole thing is later suspended at.
The frame was cut using Metalab's laser cutter from a 3mm acrylic sheet.
Completely parametrized source code is available @@@ for the frame, so you can download it and scale to your own desired size of sheet thickness.
